The PMM career ladder: how to grow from Associate PMM to VP of Product Marketing
Product marketing has no agreed definition of senior, so companies fall back on the only signal they can read, which is volume. Call it the promotion filter. It catches the loudest work and drops the judgment work in junk. Seniority here is really the altitude of the thinking and the independence of the judgment, and the path runs through four different jobs. Associate PMMs execute inside a scope somebody else drew. Mid-level PMMs own a domain and get judged on judgment. Senior PMMs set direction without authority. Directors and above build the function instead of the deliverables. The skill that moves you through all of them is making the connection between your work and the business visible before anyone asks.
